GUANGXI · WATER AND LIMESTONE

The karst country is photographed from the wrong side. We start before the boats

Three hundred million years of limestone, dissolved into the towers on the 20-yuan note. Everyone sees them; very few see them without a floating crowd in front. The answer is a raft on a smaller river at six in the morning, and staying in Yangshuo rather than day-tripping through it.

THE JOURNEY

Two rivers, and only one of them is the famous one

The Li River run from Guilin to Yangshuo is the image on the Chinese banknote — nine horses, five fingers, the apple hill. It is genuinely magnificent and it is genuinely busy: four-hour cruises on crowded decks, all arriving at the same jetty. Do it as a large boat and you will have the view without the silence.

The Yulong River is its tributary and the better half. Hand-poled bamboo rafts, no engines, shallow enough that you get wet at the stone weirs, and banks where herons stand in the shallows at a distance you can photograph without a zoom. We put you on it at first light, before the second rafts launch.

Why staying beats passing through

The river day is a four-hour transfer with a view. The Yangshuo days are the actual trip: cycling the paddy lanes between villages where nobody is selling anything, the South Bridge fields at the hour when the water reflects the towers, rock on the Li's far bank if you want to be tied to a rope and told you are fine.

North of Guilin, the Longji terraces climb a whole mountainside in layers planted by Zhuang and Yao families over six hundred years. Reachable in a day, better with one night in a wooden guesthouse on the ridge — which is also how you get the sunrise without the tour buses.

WHY WITH MEIAN

What we change on a karst itinerary

Timing, water level and which bank you get off at.

01

First light on the water

Mist sits in the towers until about 8:00 most of the year and the light is flat by ten. We move the raft, the viewpoint and the cycling to the hours that actually look like the photograph.

02

A car for the lanes buses cannot use

The good villages east of the river are reached by narrow concrete tracks. Private transport turns a nine-hour day into a comfortable five.

03

Water-level judgement

After heavy rain the raft section closes and the Li runs brown. We watch the forecast and swap the days rather than delivering a muddy river and an apology.

A flat 20 km loop through Julong and Fengqin villages with tea in a farmhouse yard, then the town's bar street only if you want it.

Yangshuo
DAY 4departure

An easy optional stop on the way out, timed to your train or flight.

Karst and terraces

5 DAYSAdds one night on the Longji ridge and Ping'an sunrise.

Slow karst

7 DAYSFor photographers and anyone who wants to stop moving.

Yangshuo as a base

Three nights in one place: raft, cycle, a climbing morning with a qualified instructor, one entirely unscheduled afternoon.

DAY 4

Xingping and the Nine Horses

DAY 5

Longji by the back road

Enter the terraces from the less-visited side, walking between hamlets instead of driving to a platform.

Ridge guesthouse
DAY 6

Back to Guilin, city museum and food

Guilin's own history, then a proper dinner — beer fish from the river, and lychee if it is the season.

Guilin
DAY 7

Departure

Guilin connects direct to Guangzhou in under three hours by rail.

WHEN TO GO

When to plan the visit

Water level and mist matter more here than temperature.

April – JuneMIST SEASON

Rain softens the light and mist sits in the towers for hours. Rivers full, rafts running. The photographers' window.

Sept – NovCLEAR WATER

Dry, warm, stable, and the terraces turn gold before harvest. Best all-round months.

December – FebruaryQUIET

Cool, grey, cheap and empty. Water levels drop so some raft sections shorten. Occasional hoar frost on the ridges.

July – AugustHOT

Humid, occasionally typhoon-fed rain, and family-peak crowds. Doable with dawn starts and midday pools.

PRACTICALITIES

For first-time visitors to China

Guangxi is easy to reach and easy to move around.

Getting to Guilin
Guilin Liangjiang Airport (KWL) is 28 km from town. Guilin is on the north-south high-speed line: Guangzhou 2h40, Shenzhen 3h, Changsha 3h20, Nanning 2h20, Kunming 4h30. Stations have English signage and we meet you at the staffed gate.
Visa
Guilin and Yangshuo sit inside the visa-free entry and 240-hour transit arrangements for eligible passports. Where a visa is required we provide the invitation letter and hotel confirmations and confirm the current rule for your nationality first.
Getting about
Between Guilin, Xingping and Yangshuo the roads are good and the distances are 60 to 110 km. Local e-bikes are everywhere; we prefer a car plus bicycles you ride yourself in the lanes.
Rain and flooding
In June and July the Li can close the raft sections for a day or two. We build a slack afternoon into summer plans rather than pretending the weather will cooperate.
Language
Hotel and restaurant staff in Yangshuo have dealt with foreigners for thirty years; village households have not. The guide earns their keep here.
Money
Alipay and WeChat Pay cover everything including raft operators. We set them up before you arrive and keep a small cash float for the ridge guesthouses.

Raft sections open and close on water level. We confirm with the operators the day before, not from a brochure.

A private Guilin and Yangshuo plan is quoted per party. Adding a night on the Longji ridge, a hand-poled raft instead of the big boat, or a climbing morning with an instructor each moves the number. We quote after we know your dates.

QUESTIONS

Asked before booking

Is the big Li River cruise worth doing?
The scenery is real, and the four-hour boat with three hundred other people is not how most of our travellers want to spend an afternoon. We run the Xingping stretch by car and raft instead, which covers the same cliffs at a better hour. If you want the full cruise anyway, we will book the upper deck and tell you honestly what to expect.
Do I need to be able to cycle?
No. The lanes around Yangshuo are flat and e-bikes are available; we can replace the cycling with a car loop and short walks instead.
How do I get the 20-yuan-note photograph?
Stand at the Xingping viewpoint on the west bank before nine in the morning. We time it, and we bring the note, because people do not believe it matches.
Is Longji worth the drive?
For one night, yes. As a day trip from Guilin it is a six-hour round trip for two hours of view, and you miss the only part that is special, which is the ridge at dawn with nobody on it.
Can we combine Guilin with Zhangjiajie?
Yes, by rail via Huaihua, or by a short flight. The two are the classic Chinese landscape pairing and work well as a nine- or ten-day trip.
